Ege Subaşı (b. 1995, Istanbul) is a Montenegro-based artist who explores the fragmented self through themes of identity, memory, and existential uncertainty. A graduate of Yeditepe University (MA in Arts and Cultural Management, 2023; BA in Plastic Arts and Management, 2019), Subaşı investigates the discrepancy between perception and reality in her practice, which combines painting, photography, and mixed media.
The metaphor of the “Smoke Screen” stands out in the artist's work—this concept visually articulates how external factors blur the authentic self, leaving behind only faint, partially remembered traces. Building upon her own photographs, Subaşı adds painterly layers to these images, transforming moments into new narratives; in doing so, she questions the static nature of memory and identity. While her portrait and figurative works oscillate between clarity and abstraction, the textured surface reflects the transient nature of the self.
Deconstructing and reconstructing the traditional understanding of portraiture, Subaşı invites viewers to confront the elusive boundaries between reality, alienation, and reconstruction.
