Ege Subaşı (b. 1995, Istanbul) is a Montenegro-based artist who explores the fragmented self through themes of identity, memory, and existential uncertainty. A graduate of Yeditepe University (MA in Art and Cultural Management, 2023; BA in Plastic Arts and Management, 2019), Subaşı investigates the dissonance between perception and reality in her practice, which combines painting, photography, and mixed media.
The "Smoke Screen" metaphor is central to the artist's work—this concept visually articulates how external influences blur the authentic self, leaving behind only faint, partially recalled traces. Subaşı uses her own photographs as a foundation, adding painterly layers to transform these images into new narratives, thereby questioning the static nature of memory and identity. Her portrait and figurative works oscillate between clarity and abstraction, while the textured surfaces reflect the transience of the self.
Deconstructing and reconstructing the traditional understanding of portraiture, Subaşı invites viewers to confront the elusive boundaries between reality, alienation, and reconstruction.
